I still have my other sewing machine, though I sold it to someone. I can't remember if I have given her a refund. I'm going to try and use that.

Thanks for the advice, I'll buy some decent cotton and see if that helps. I tend to end up with the 3 for $2 type of stuff, which really is kind of ... not good. I know how to re-thread the small one now!
