Motivation

Motivation is a causal thingy in the head er psychology in humans. IE, it leads to actions in the real world as well as in the thinking world. Self esteem, self efficacy, self affirmation are all parts of motivation.

Attribution errors - people believe their motivational sources are wrong? Never quite know what their real motivations are. They don't look deep enough into themselves to see what is true or what just sounds applicable.
- externalise - "I'm just lucky" ignoring personal skills and talents.
- internalise - "I'm good" - ie valuing personal skills and talents as the medium to which you have obtained your current success.

Can also be organic reasons affecting motivation, such as depression, but we are unskilled at determining this for ourselves. Once you become aware of the patterns of depression and similar psychological issues, then you can work with them and around them to still accomplish things.

Favourite Phrase for the Day: "Decisional Balance Beam". Steve and Robyn used this in terms of when you are trying to make a decision and you keep swinging one way or the other. Prime example, watching the late night movie. You know you have to get up and go to work the next morning, but this bit is so interesting! Next ad....you know you have to get up in only five more hours .... but who the hell did it?? Eventually the beam tips one way or the other (Man, I have three hours in which to sleep, these Indian movies go forever! or He did it????? Movie is over!)

Drivers of Personal Motivation
-Personal Gain
-Cash Incentives
-Job Satisfaction
-Pride
-Desire for Greatness
-Competitive Spirit
-Serving others
-Doing the Right Thing
-Overcoming Odds (Challenges)

Addiction - addiction in a mental ambivalence over a dependancy.
Dependancy - where you need something to function. Or even think you need something to function. IE, I am dependant on my morning coffee. I would be addicted to my morning coffee if I *REALLY* wanted to stop but just couldn't. So people who have a drug habit but are OK with this, DO NOT HAVE AN ADDICTION. Ok?
(By the way, we've scored an espresso maker. It does two cups of coffee at once, and we can make cappuccinos and macchiatos and stuff with it. When it gets in, I think it's time to start buying the ol' decaf otherwise I'll NEVER sleep!)

What did I think?
I think that the workshop would probably have provided more value to the people there as a three hour workshop rather than a seminar. There was a lot of stuff to cover, but a lot of people would not really relate it back to themselves unless they were stepped through it. It did sort of bring up the whole "staying in bed because it's too hard to get up and look for a job" and that it is a good idea to try and look at "why" but didn't really cover any of the "hows." A point which I made which I'm pretty proud of is that it is also worthwhile to spend some time defining what "successful" means to you. The goal you have might be to make a million dollars, but your idea of success may be a lovely house, wife, and children. It's possible to attain goals but not be successful in this scenario (ie, you make the million or more, but your wife leaves you because you're never home and your children are whiny little sh*ts because of a lack of discipline in their lives.

But yes, it was interesting. The other thing I learnt was another theory about the JFK killing - the initial shot from Lee maybe did just hit the president, but the actual mortal shot was an accidental shot from a body guard. *grin* Cool, huh?
