In a fit of enthusiam, I went and bought some packet cakes to practice with. Not much point in my trying out cakes that actually cost a lot of money if I'm likely to stuff them up now is there??
:-)
So, two butter cake mixes and a huge handful of glace cherries later, we have:
The Cherry Cake.
Same thing but a bit closer. :-)
Then, I tried to neaten it up, which involves sawing off the bottom with a breadknife. I didn't have any picket fences nearby, nor a hacksaw blade, so I had to make do with guesswork and a breadknife. :-) I think I learnt something - and that something appears to be "Use three packet cakes, and saw the uneven bottom off before taking the cake out of the tin."
The cake stand is glass, which is why the cake looks like it's standing in green water.
Cool. Not bad for $1.40 worth of cake mix, 50 cents worth of milk and a couple of eggs.
I even bought some chocolate to make a ganache type frosting later on when I practice some more. *grin* I hope you're all hungry. Each packet cake apparently = 10 serves.

I wonder if I should enter this in a Swancon cake making contest. Especially if I ice it and then decorate it. Chesh reckons it looks like a volcano. I reckon we could attach cherries and lollies and make it look like a castle. Or yes, definately the snowcapped mountains! (The mountains of chanandran perhaps...)
*grin*
