callistra: Fuschia from Sinfest crying her heart out next to Hell's flames (Evil Purposes)
I have been thinking for a while now about organizing a women's weekend somewhere. I would love it. I'd get to do all the things I like doing (organizing it, cooking, that sort of thing) and get to spend some time on women's stuff. (TM) :-) But what would the women's stuff be? I have no idea what I would have as panels/workshops/discussions etc, but I figured other people might... so I had a bit of a chat with babalon_93 about perhaps running it as a part of Gynaecon, or at least to discuss around Gynaecon, and then Sarah and every one else who is used to that side of things can do the hard stuff and I can get away with the easy stuff!

So. A FemCon. FemmeConne? Femmecon?

Part of my vision included discussions and possible enactments of rites of passage in modern day society. Discussions on the segmentation of society from "single" "couple" amd "family" and how/if we can break down the barriers and extend a feeling of community that is not religion based. Whatever. :-) We would probably only have two nights (friday and saturday night) so there's not that much time to fill if we're going to do this and be relaxed about things. But one night would not be long enough to really relax. Friday night you get to know every one, and Saturday is when we deepen that knowledge.

Children would be welcome to come down. We'd put the food into the cost and have communal meals. And if there was room in the budget we'd have a few bottles of wine to share. Not much though, just enough to help people relax. Items would start at ooo... 11ish in the morning. Lunch at 1. I expect I'm not the only person who likes to cook, so we'd all be helping each other. Things would be relaxed and people could go for walks, have lunch on the loungeroom floor, jigsaw puzzles, cards, panels or discussions, chat, all that sort of thing.

Would any one be interested? I'm hoping to create a woman only space, so women and children. If we get enough people, two cottages, one for people with children and one for people without. Children are of course the problem of their parents/family. :-) Perhaps a panel on cooking with friends, cooking as a way of communication, group biscuit making... ! :-)

Suggestions? Comments? Ideas? Expressions of interest? I haven't talked to any one beyond Sarah in the Gynaecon crowd, so I hope I'm not stepping on any toes, and hope that you all think this is a wonderful idea as well. If there is enough interest, I was thinking of making up a questionaire for people to fill out at Swancon. I'm thinking it might cost $75 a head, but I have not yet done a budget for it. That would include two night's accomodation, two main meals, two lunches , and two breakfasts plus tea, coffee, fruit, desserts for dinner, bread, general snackiness, that sort of thing, and potentially come extra fun, maybe a pinata and props for some of the entertainment. I'm also thinking perhaps late August/September? I'll start collating information on this after the weekend. I wish I had my pc - a lot of the info I already have! PC should be running if not on the next by next week, which means I can start thinking. Have I mentioned how much I love excel??

:-)

No probs for the idea with this gynaeconner. We always hoped that other women would come up with and develop their own ideas!

wouldn't it be great if a weekend that happens to be at the same time as full moon could be found :)

Actually, I was thinking the 9th of september for that kind of reason. Also happens to be a sat.

Full moons appear to be way too popular. Eventually I did ask if she had ever compared booking cycles against a moon calendar, which made her laugh. I'm thinking the 5/6th of August now, when they have cottages near each other and we're talking waxing moon rather than waning.

If that helps at all.

9th of Sept? It's going to be much much smaller than Fandomedia.

Possibly the 5/6th of August at this rate...

Yay August ^_^

all sounds good to me. I think august/september sounds like a pretty good time too. I am happy to be in charge of programing and information distribution if you are happy to take care of logistics (which if you ask me sounds like the actual hard part) :)

Heh, and this is called "synergy..."

LOL

9th of Sept? Full moon, and your baby should be about the age that Vincent is now.

My 'baby' just messaged me to say her period started last night and to apologise for her recent behaviour. I love the idea of a rite-of-passage thing, something to help her towards womanhood. Sign me up.

yay! I'm so glad for you that she both apologised and that she shared her womanly news knowing how much it meant to you :)

It is good news. And she's more than willing to ask me questions and get advice. I took her out to Burswood last night to celebrate and it was lovely. We went to the Atrium for dinner and spent two hours talking about all sorts of topics. It was one of the best nights I've ever spent.

A VICTORY!!!

Yay!! *laughs with happiness for you*

See? Just keep going. You're doing ALL THE RIGHT THINGS.

I would like to come too. The right of passage for my girls was to get their ears pierced - when they were 13. I know most of you are all still young but there are age barriers in society too and I am not sure if they affect men and women in the same way. Also with the loss of the extended family has come the loss of incidental information about such things as how to cope with children, childhood illnesses, menopause, relationships........ much more. There is also the plight of women in other countries and cultures. Much to talk about, yes!

Date: 2006-02-09 11:08 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] callistra.livejournal.com
I would love to have as many people of as many age groups as possible! And yes, I completely agree about the age barriers that need to be addressed too - I had a grey hair, and I was proudly showing it off once, and the women I was showing it to were disturbed that I was proud To me, it meant that I was moving on in age and wisdom and knowledge (not necessarily the same things there) and yet to them, the connotations were worthless and unattractive. I earnt that bloody grey hair.

Y'know, every sentence there could take a whole femcon to discuss. :-)

I am hesitant to tackle the plight of women in other countries. It's such a huge topic, and ... it's just .... so big.... but hey, no reason why not.
:-)

Any daughters you'd like to bring?
:)

I went through the proud of my grey hairs stage but it seems easier to do my job if I look younger. So as I have to colour my hair anyway I have decided to go multi coloured streeks - redish brown, light brown and dark brown. I think next time I will get some orange brown as well.

I will ask daughters.

Cool

As a gynaeconner, I am happy to see new ideas developing. Have fun organising it!
