Has there been a nuclear war or something and I've not noticed? I mean... why else would you be willing to pay over $8 for a kilo of apples???

I blame Today Tonight/ACA and their series of articles about how terrible it is that supermarkets sell 10 month old apples.

They eventually got some apple growers on recently who said "um, apples are seasonal guys, so that's what happens when you want to buy apples year round. Actually they are in season now - go buy some fresh apples!"

Thus thousands of Australians are introduced to the concept of seasonal fruit.

Also, apocalypse.

As you can imagine, Zoo animals eat a lot of apples - our Purchasing Officer has seen the price double over the last few months. Pears too, and other fruit and veg will be going the same way.

There's a real shortage of apples and pears at the moment - apparently the big buyers like Coles and Woolies have first dibs and whatever is left is now auctioned off to the highest bidder.

off topic

The last couple of heat waves did a fair bit of damage to the local crops. Not sure if the Manjumup ones were affected.

Fuel prices haven't helped either. I've seen around a 15% increase in transport costs specifically due to fuel in the last 2 years. (Company I work for transports the majority of Perth's organic freight to and from the north west.)
