I just made a mayonnaise from "Feeding Your Skin" and thought I would take some notes. Ooo, that webpage has some recipes on it too.
Ok, the food processor does not work on a single egg yolk. Yes, perhaps this should have been obvious, but it's been a long time since I made mayo, and last time we did it with a bowl and a whisk. Which is how I ended up starting it off - I went to a bowl and a whisk and beat the living daylights out of this egg.
This was a good start.
So, since I already have various aches and pains from a number of other things, I put it into the food processor again, hoping it would now work since there was enough bulk to kick it off. I start dripping the sweet almond oil in, drop by drop. It eventually seperates. Crap. I hope blending the crap out of it will fix it. Crap. The answer is no, it doesn't. Crap. I decide, when it's seperated after I stop pressing the BLEND button, that I need to re-work the emulsion.
When making real mayo, you add mustard. Partially for flavour, but mostly because the mustard particles aid the emulsion. So, my emulsion is not an emulsion, mustard in a facial cleanser is a bad idea all round (I think...) and so, time for another egg yolk, beat the crap out of it, and we'll add the initial mix one drop at a time until it's all good.
And lo, it is all good. I now have lavendar, ylang ylang and patchouli scented mayonnaise in my fridge. Yay! Now I just have to be game enough to try it. The book says... face and body cleanser, moisturizer, bath cream or hair treatment. So perhaps the next time I get an evening alone, I shall good myself up and see how it all goes.
I've already used my hair treatment for the week, so I might not do it on the hair just yet. But I did particularly want it as a face cleanser, as I am hoping to use makeup a bit more in future. Anyway, this batch has 10ish drops of lavendar (the damned essential oil RAN. The other two droppers worked perfectly. :-(), 3 drops of Ylang Ylang and 2 drops of Patchouli.
Anyway, apparently it will last for 2 - 3 weeks as it is. Another page in the book suggests vitamin E oil to increase longevity of various stuffs, but don't actually mention the mayo, so I won't deviate from the recipe right now. I am amused that anything using the oils listed is recommended as "cheap." The sweet almond oil I got was pretty cheap at $11 for 750 mLs, but before that I got pressured into buying 100mLs for the same price. Not impressed with that. Will use the small expensive bottle when I make the panda eyes cleansing oil. Why yes, I do have a weakness for eyeliner, mascara and kohl. Why do you ask?
I also need to obtain apricot kernel oil. I was wondering if any one else is interested in this sort of stuff, cos if so then I can slide it into the Femmeconne stream and buy everything we need. The recipes I have for the most part involve teaspoons and tablespoon sized suggestions. They are completely untried (today is the first time I have tried something from this book) but they look good and it looks like fun.

Date: 2008-08-31 05:15 am (UTC)From:I was seriously looking at learning how to make cheese at one point. Tusk does his own alcohol and I have made berry liqueurs from that, but apart from that and yoghurt I don't do nearly as much as I would like to.
However, I do like to collect the recipes so that 'one day' I will be able to be self sufficient and make everything :D

Hmmm.. self sufficiency...
I went to a wool spinning workshop yesterday and it was awesome! But I am incredibly glad I don't need to do that to get my nighty on at night and sleep under my nice warm blankey.
