If they needed to contact everyone, there are usually ways to do that that don't involve complete breaches of etiquette.

Someone has *just* suggested that maybe setting every one to Special Notices, and then emailing once might have been a bit more polite.
:-)

:P Well that's the way I am!

I think it is just plain insane. I sent one collective email out to all users when I started the newsletter for my site, just in case they were interested - that was as I was still building the site. But everyone after it was installed were never contacted, those who didn't sign up weren't, and those who choose to unsubscribe stay unsubscribed. No one but those signed up to the newsletter get any emails at all (unless it is self-generated, like 'forgot your password' emails and stuff).

Your account should NEVER be changed (if you are obeying the rules, if not then well you earned it). Your account should NEVER have forced subscriptions.
As it is, it sounds more like invading your privacy. No one should ever do this. This is not being paranoid - it's just basic website management sense.

Yeah, I completely agree with all of what you said. This is why I posted my poll, to have a bit of a giggle. :)

LoL and here I am getting riled up about it :P

I return back to my STAB! comment for the humour :D

If I was cranky, I would have posted a long and involved rant, gotten bored, and then deleted it.
:-)
This is much more fun!
I am amused by the replies from people as they figure out what has happened. She did come out and tell every one on the list what she had done.

Hah! If I got a spaceship part everytime I did that, then I'd have a fleet XD

What was her excuse for doing it, just curiously?

Date: 2009-03-02 11:36 am (UTC)From: [identity profile] callistra.livejournal.com
The list was dead. Or very quiet.
She was hoping to revive it a bit.

*Sigh*
There's so much I want to say, and just go nuts about how to run and maintain a site or internet thingy. AS I had to say to another mate about Twilight in a comment posted barely a few seconds ago: must....restain.....self!

This also opens up a can of worms for the Australian SPAM regulations. IE They have now just sent you unsolicited email, you can now complain to the government regulatory persons and the person/company who did this can be fined.

That is a very LOOSE description of how that works BTW.

But also hell rude and big breach of etiquette. Mods have ways of mailing the list members without changing their preferences.

I didn't think of that LOL

I'm a moderator on several lists and would never do that. It is beyond rude.

She is a sub-mod but she checked with the mod first and they said OK.

nomail etc

Perhaps there was a message that was of such importants that everyone on list needed to see it; although I would not know what sort of message that would be. Also if I as a list admin (which I am) were going to globally change a preference on all my subscribers i'd have a pretty damn good reason for doing it, and I can't think of one at the moment unless mod had to get a message to all list memebers and feared nomailers wouldn't see it or read the archives.

The list was quiet/dead.

Mailing list is forced to move hosts; only the subscriber list (ie. not the individual settings) can be extracted from the old host. Thus everyone gets set to individual emails. (I had to do this recently.)

I don't think that's quite the same - you didn't have a choice, and you didn't go through and set every one to no mail manually. You did the best with what you could.

(Plus, you handled it quite respectfully from what I could see)

Fair enough (and thank you).

Not only is it a complete breach of etiquette, but I'm also unsubscribing from the list. Bugger that shit.

depends on the reason, from what I read in the comments (that the list was dead and they wanted some comments) that is not a good enough reason
