Chesh and I saw RED last night. Here I discuss my loves and dislikes about the film.
1) Karl Urban. What's not to love?
2) A rather nicely understated role from Bruce Willis. I was very impressed, and he was just lovely. Creepy. at time, but lovely.
3) How old was Sarah again?
4) Helen Mirren was awesome.
5) Karl Urban had a few ... well... he wasn't at his best. But hey, it's Karl Urban. I can forgive a lot.
6) Tight, tight writing and pacing. I was excited to see how they would finish the movie, since it was obviously going to need to handle Karl's character sensitively as well as every one else.
7) Helen changing into boots with her evening gown
8) Her saying to John "I can't survive this, go," and John going "Ok," and respecting her by doing so. No weeping and wailing and stupid protectiveness just cos she's a woman.
9) Failed Bechdel test.
10) Black dude sacrifice for white dude. *sigh* Why couldn't John Malkovich have been the sacrificial dude?
11) Chesh and my sequel: Girl's Night Out. It's ten years later, and the opening shot is of the wedding, people in pews, in a church, Bruce in tux, bride in white... camera pans around couple, slowing zooming around to show her rather bruised and beaten face and Bruce's look of shock. She shrugs, gives him a not terribly apologetic smile and says "Great Hen's night?" and the caption says "24 hours earlier..." as we fade to black.
