Is some one with a with-held phone number trying to get me on my mobile phone? And having incredibly bad luck with my answering? I've missed someone who keeps ringing me and not leaving messages over ten times now, and I'm starting to get annoyed with it. That's what the answering machine is for.

Just then my phone went "Br-" and since it was sitting on my keyboard, I grabbed it but it was already gone. It might be because of the dodgy connection around my pc, in this instance, but other times I have tried to catch it and just been unlucky, had my arms full of child, or just not known it was ringing. Also, my battery has only just been reliable since about Tuesday this week. When we took it out of the freezer. Which, strangely enough, 48 hours of being cold has made it much much much more reliable.

So, my email address is callisto at g mail dot com.

It might be telemarketers doing the phantom dialling. I've had that quite a lot with my landline and have been told it is because they'll ring several numbers at once (no idea how) and whoever answers first is the one who gets hassled. Everyone else gets empty air and a click as of hanging up.

Diallers are EVIL....EVIL I say
but there is a way to tell, if there is empty air for about 3 seconds, then a click, it is generally an automated dialler routing an outbound consultant to the connected call.

Let it connect, then hang up. Unless it connects they don't get charged for the call, and besides it's only 4 seconds of you life for some well deserved petty revenge :)

Or more practical advice is to contact the Australin direct Marketers association and have your name and number added to the (as yet voluntary) "No Contact Register". Supposedly once you are on the list direct marketers are no longer permitted to call you.

you could probably whinge at the TIO as well

finally all those years working in a call centre have paid off :)

Both John and I are on the no call list, but it is voluntary, and then you get lusers who ring to be all breathless at you because Company such and such has given you a PRIZE! No, we're not selling anything so we don't need to listen to any no-call list!

What worries me is that by calling me and answering me they can say that they had a history with me and could lead to trouble if they switch my mobile phone carriers on me or something.

I'm almost too scared to answer the phone, these days.
