callistra: Fuschia from Sinfest crying her heart out next to Hell's flames (Pocoyo!)
I dragged [livejournal.com profile] babalon_93 around Target and Carousel the other day and grabbed some stuff for summer. My search for a Summer Dress was fruitless, however, I found four tops I put on layby. Things were also slightly complicated by the theft of my purse.

I returned this morning and grabbed the layby, and checked out 1626 (I LOVE that place) and they have a summer dress I liked, but I need to take [livejournal.com profile] babalon_93 back with me and torture her some more, and they said they were getting more summer dresses soon too, so it's worth my waiting.

I've just gone through the new tops I bought and I am so excited that I have cleaned out 12 items from my wardrobe! TWELVE! Mostly summer clothes from a few seasons ago, all in good nick, hence not being removed in the last few wardrobe clean outs, but I figure it's time for me to catch up with the times. I also saw some HAWT shoes that I want. But they didn't *quite* fit perfectly, so I figured I would wait and then hit Spendless Shoes or whatever they are called that specialize in cheap, fashionable stuff.

I have a question for you fashionistas out there: Belts on big women. What's with that? I saw some belts today that went all the way around me, and wuld sit on my hips, rather than my waist. Are belts on big women flattering? The ones I saw were big wide belts, like 4 inches wide, and had a massive belt buckle (round, I might add). I've always been leery of belts; I think the 80s kind of broke me; the wide elastic bands got me into corsetry, and well away from belts. But should I be convinced otherwise?

I've seen good use of belts, if you want to lengthen your waistline. It would be a try and see thing, I have seen horrific uses of belts and good ones. You can always take them into a change room, more torture for someone, and try and see.

Thin belts or wide belts?
It can lengthen your waistline? How curious! I would have thought drawing a big fat line across your middle would: a) break you into two and b) make you look shorter as a whole.

I'm not good at the visual things in life.

If you wear it on your hips, it can add some shape and makes your top half look longer, and it's usually a thinner belt, I can't help with the visuals. Again you have to see it on you, if it's going to make you look boxy then it's not working for you. As stated I've seen it used well and not so well.

That makes more sense now. So it's an uneven balance thing kind of. Making your top half look longer than it really is.

I shall offer my opinion, as I take a great interest in these things (chubby fashion can be such an absorbing challenge sometimes). It might not be a terribly useful contribution, however - I think that belts can look good on big women, providing they are not too tight - I think they should be loose enough to be slung on the hips, and preferably with some length left over. I think you can get away with a belt like this over a dress or tunic type shirt - something loose - so the belt draws the flowiness of the fabric in a little, for a slimming effect. That's my two cents! ;)

In my mind's eye, I can see how that works. But in reality, most tops designed that sort of way tend to look very boxy on me. I do have a waist, but that sort of top where it is loose and flowing everywhere and abit of a gather around the hip just tends to turn me shapeless. It might just be me though.

Definately have to torture someone with this one! The belt I tried on was designed (I think) to have no left over, so that wouldnot qualify for your qualifyingnessything!

Aaaah, yes - I find those tops look boxy on me too, they do look good on some people though. Having never met you in RL, I don't know what you look like!

Got a camera phone? If so, try it on in the shop, get the sales assistant to take a picture, and post it on LJ! :)

I found a dress in Target the other day! First "dress" I've worn in about 3 years :)

I wore my target dress on Friday night and everyone stated that I'd glammed up for the evening! It was a Target dress FFS! :D :D

Erk on the purse theft.

How did that happen?

I can't see you letting anyone grab it out of your hands, without you giving them a solid belting.

Did you get it back?

Or are you now doing the whole cancel every card and apply for a new one thing?

Ack to the theft too. :P
Theif didn't end up with a Vinnie chewing on his ankles? What else are tiny tots for but siccing on would be muggers?
:>

Agreed with the belt can work in some instances...But wide belts with big buckles rarely work...even on fashion models judging by the horrendous outfits I was exposed to in Cleo at my sibs place.. :P

(btw, thought you might like the fic I've been posting. Not sure anyone can see it, so warn me if you can't)

I found it

Oh, it didn't worry me much. They took it from the back of Vinnie's pram while I was looking at some clothes, and I only have the one CC. I got a little bit worried when I realised I had my driver's license in there too, because that can mean identity theft.

But they seemed to go through everything, grabbed the $16, and my multirider, and then dumped the whole thing in Pumpkin Patch. So we had the purse back within about 20 minutes.
