Crikey!

It's the line "...survived by a wife and two children." that saddens me, as such lines always do.

The man was a tool, and I thought his brand of semi-retarded ockerism was embarrassing, but children of 44 years old men shouldn't grow up fatherless.

yeah I thought the man was a tool too and yeah I feel sorry for his wife and kids as well .

I really thought a croc would have got him in the end , oh well :/.

I so thought a crocodile deserved to get him in the end. (NB, obviously it's a terrible tragedy and I have nothing but the deepest sympathy for both Mr Irwin himself and the family and friends he leaves behind, but you've got to admit that the man's career was roughly akin to sneaking around giggling while pinning "Smite me" onto the Grim Reaper's back.)

It's very sad. And it is sad that his public persona put alot of people off, thinking that he was a brainless tool. But he was a tireless defender of the Australian, particularly the Queensland, environment. What many people don't know is that he went around spending his money buying ex-pastoral properties in western Queensland, particuarly in areas that contained examples of vegetation and ecosystems that are rapidly disappearing. He has bought areas of brigalow scrub solely to converve this ecosystem and the species dependent on it. If more people were as devoted to the Australian environment as Steve Irwin was, then Australia would be in much better condition for future generations.

I also found it sad that someone immediately updated the Wiki article, and were horrible about it. I read it, and then when I refreshed the article has already been locked down because some twit out there was so horrible.

I saw an ad on Foxtel yesterday for a wildlife hospital that he's built? I agree, as much as he wasn't my cup of tea, I admire his love of Australia, and all in it.

This I did not know and it's a tragedy that I (and I'm guessing most people) didn't.

You're right: I didn't know that. I wish we, as the general public, saw more of that side of him rather than the grinning nit he gave us. What a pity-- we're a country that needs a committed, intelligent, public crusader of that variety, and he could have fit the bill.

It's sad to see someone with such a high profile, albeit one we didn't like, die in their prime. Especially with kids. I always feel for them.

My mother rang to tell me on the bus, while I was hearing someone on the back seat have the news given to them by phone. Weird. "Can you actually DIE from a stingray? Wow!"

Poor, poor family. Never easy. :(

He's also in this month's edition of Marie Claire - there's a beautiful (now saddening) photo of him and his daughter. Yes, he courted danger for a living, but you have to admire his passion and dedication to Australian native wildlife.

What I admired about the guy was that he was someone who really grasped that you only get one shot at life. He was one of those people who made every minute count, always constructing, creating, doing. (I admire this as I am a shocking procrastinator, ditherer, depressive...)

(Watching him now replayed on Enough Rope)

Yes, just hearing him speak about his parents, his family, his work and the environment, his life was definitely filled with passion. Oh that I could find that energy!
