I just saw the footage on TV of the swimmer being attacked by her father. I hope he gets put away. People need to know that's NOT RIGHT.
I have a funeral on Friday.
I'm so not a ball of chirpiness today. All I want to do is cry and comfort eat, neither of which is good.
*sigh*
And I have to clean tears off my glasses again.

35 mins til I need to leave
I can't concentrate on work, can't concentrate on anything, staring out the window wondering where 11 years went.
I am sorry you have a funeral to go to - knowing people won't be in our lives anymore is hard to take.
My eyes keep leaking on my keyboard.

I hate being so far away.

Date: 2007-03-28 07:43 am (UTC)From:And yes, this happens around us all the time. At the dinner we did the other day for a women's refuge, the most interesting comment was made by the counsellor, who was saying that no one expects victims of terrorists to free themselves, and yet our society seems to think women should be able to. There's been a lot of discussion about that.

It will be great to meet you, but I believe your attending Swancon, and we have enough overlap with friends that I am sure we might have seen each other before.

But cool!
:-)
I'll be the one proudly walking around with a 19mo shaped hole next to me. :-) We're bringing him in on the Thursday, but I will be completely surprised when we leave him with his Grandparents on the Friday!

I have glasses, short brown hair, huge grin, big boobs, big everything, and will probably be mostly sitting in a corner chatting with people or in the bar. We're at the acacia.... um.... yeah. And if you see a rapid show of women flashing their bras, it's usually because I started it. So I'll be in there somewhere.

Date: 2007-03-28 05:59 am (UTC)From: (Anonymous)it has been 'in progress' for ages, but due to work and uni and moving house this saturday it kept getting delayed. I finally got my act together on the weekend and got to the post office on Monday, but I wasn't sure how long it would take to arrive.
and I'm especially pleased it arrived on a day when you really needed a nice surprise, because that kind of thing is always good. yay :D

Date: 2007-03-28 10:10 am (UTC)From:One of my ex-students at St H's told me of her swimming coach hitting her when she didn't want to do something (she didn't seem to think it was out of the ordinary). I asked if she'd told her mum but she hadn't (I did). That's just ONE instance of violence in coaching that I know of. The prevalence of emotional abuse is HUGE though: I remember one being threatened with being dropped from her squad if she dared to go on school camp and miss 3 days of training. And not just a passing threat- it was weeks of pressure, the poor kid was on the verge of a breakdown over it. And don't get me started on the routine elite young gymnasts go through.
This gets attention because it's on film and it seems so extreme. Makes it hard to ignore. I abhor the actions of the man, but I abhor the acceptance of less extreme forms of abuse even more.
