I got the new phone. Yay! Finally!
However... it took an hour plus to get! Apparently vodaphone have a new system... and it doesn't work.

But yay, new phone!

We fed the Vinster some donut holes and bandaged his finger and it looked much better by the time he'd pulled it off. I was just so sorry when it happened, the poor little bunny cried and cried and cried.

Also, hoping now to buy a laptop extremely cheaply. Like $400, Chesh says, by Christmas. All it has to do is be small, and run Notetab.  However apparently they will come with wifi as part of it, and Chesh will put Linux on it, and there's lots of almost identical text editors to Notetab for Linux (I keep thinking "Linoox"). All I want it for is so I can write when I have to be sitting around waiting, or else outside when I have a nice cup of tea, or in front of the TV...

Ok, bed time for me again! Love yas all.
:-)

Yay new mobile phone! Expect some pics of broad beans before I slice 'em and dice 'em back into green manure!

I've been hanging out for these too. There's been talk though that there will be a significant mark-up for Australia though (similar to what we get with game consoles and Microsoft products) so the $400 price point probably won't be hit locally.

If you can, see if you can salary sacrifice for one of the these (http://www1.ap.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/notebooks_good?c=au&cs=aubsd1&l=en&s=bsd). List price $698, tax advantages and all the rest might swing it close to the $400 mark and it'll have greater storage capacity, etc.

But I don't *want* a laptop with a 15.4 inch screen. I want one the size of a hardcover book. I don't need to *look* at what I am writing, I just want the portability to type into a notepad-alike program without lugging around a whole laptop.

Besides, Salary sacrifice requires one of us to have a job.
:-)

My books are in .txt format, so hard drive size is completely valueless in that regards, and I'd have the desktop for "real" work.

So a laptop doesn't really meet my needs so well as the Eee would.

Ah well. If your heart's set on a particular make/model, your heart's set. Your original post seemed to suggest that all it had to be was cheap, modern and able to run NoteTab and/or perhaps Linux.

Sorry to hear about the job thing (unless it was an intentional break, to help out with the impending bub).

Well, I am happy to wait for an extendable keyboard but it's the size and portability that's important. I don't find laptops terribly portable.

Whether it's an Eee or something else, I don't need 15.5 inches of anything right now!
:-)

Fnarr fnarr ;-).

I really liked the original price and specs for the eeePC, but, it seems that they're capitalising a bit much on the high demand (driven by reports of low price/good value) to drive up the price a bit. At USD $400 plus an Australian mark-up, it starts to compete with those lower cost full size models.

I guess the good thing, with all the hype the eeePC and OLPC/XO are getting, is the manufacturers realise there's a huge available market for cheap little laptops out there :-)

Do you think the markup is because someone is being greedy, or because there is a genuine cost difference that needs to be addressed? Because if it's just people being greedy, I have international friends...
:-)

Greed's a part of it (everyone in the supply chain wants their cut of profit), but, I reckon the major part would be just that Australia's a lower volume destination and, while there's still market to be saturated in places like the US, there'll always be a premium cost associated with new gadgets.

International friends can work (even if their name is only Mr eBay), but then you have the extra expense of either replacing the power pack or buying a US/AUS power adapter. (Then there's the question of what happens if you need to get warranty repairs...)

If it were software, I'd definitely say import. For example, you'd save heaps on a copy of any Microsoft product with the exchange rate being the way it is :-).
