Winamp sucks. And I was updating file info yesterday when there was a powercut and now it won't play at all. I have reinstalled, and it's still not playing well. I could uninstall and then reinstall, but that sounds like work, and Winamp has been steadily sucking more and more with each version.

So, recommendations? I don't need anything unusual - play lists, plays music, that's all I need... I think...

Rob set me up Amarok, if that helps. It does what I tell it...

If you want something that has a similar look and feel to iTunes, but don't actually want to use iTunes (or can't in my case - for some reason it stopped working one day and nothing I try makes it work again) there's Songbird (http://getsongbird.com/)

I'll admit, I've never actually tried iTunes

Does hack, spit Windows Media Player work? *wonders if the problem really is with Winamp itself*

Maybe try VLC (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/)?

Though I would suggest that uninstalling before reinstalling wouldn't be much extra work. Don't forget that learning a new media player is also work. :P

I'm a big foobar fan. It's extremely light, fast, and has tons of plug-ins and skins if you want more power and beauty. I like the bare bones program because it's so efficient.

Oh, and I find iTunes to be a massive resource hog. It's slow, loads a bunch of crap you don't need, and drives me batty. MediaMonkey is a better program if you want to create and organize an entire music library.

Ok, my machine is already not the fastest (honestly, some days it can't keep up with my typing) so anything with the word "resource hog" associated is not good.

I'll check out foobar then

I hate iTunes with a passion - i currently prefer windows media player for my music and VLC for all other media :)

What you want is Foobar 2000. Google it and you'll find a download link. Small memory footprint, freeware, simple interface, no drm hassles.

I use an old version of Winamp, downloaded from OldVersion.com (http://www.oldversion.com/program.php?n=winamp). So if you were very happy with an old release, and don't want to have to get used to a new program, this should help.
