I have installed Open Office.
I have tried it before and didn't like it, but since Word fucks me over every time I use it on a project, I have to consider the next best thing.

I will be posting for advice every 5 seconds I expect. Any ideas how to insert page numbers? I am about to hit the manual...

That sounds like something you'd normally put in the header/footer (to enable: Format menu; Page...; Header; Header on).

But whereever you put it, to insert the current page number go Insert menu; Fields; Page Number.

I have OO.o 2.4 here; hopefully yours (3.0?) is not too much different.

And I've just noticed that you can also turn headers/footers on/off with the appropriate options in the Insert menu too. :P

OK, got that, the help manuals were surprisingly helpful. Now I need to try and force it to accept the author. I don't know what is going wrong there.

I got it.
Going Insert->Field->Author wasn't picking up the user info, but I went the longer route and forced it in, and now it's picking up the user info. (The second way was to pull up *all* the fields and select Author -> Name and then click INSERT.)

Oh, I see. Don't worry, it's not just you. Though personally I wouldn't have bothered using a field for it; it's not like we expect the author to change. :P
