They've deleted the Aboriginal flag from the winning artwork for Australia Day.

ETA apparently google did ask permission to use it, but the person who owns the copyright wanted payment/denied them or something. So they did *try*
:-)

Considering how little Australia Day has anything to do with the first Australians (and if anything, celebrates the date their slaughter started), I'm not surprised.

Reading the last comments at "sly-girl" and following the links I think Google, whilst a bunch of dick-wads, have covered themselves against potential copyright infringement. Permission to fly the flag exists, but not to display electronically. Maybe they should have awarded the win to someone else with less potential for ass-hattery and flak.

According to Google something to do with copyright of the image? http://google-au.blogspot.com/2010/01/happy-australia-day.html

Yeh, google did at least ask for permission to use the image of the flag, unlike the girl who designed the google image.
It's unfortunate that the one bloke who owns the copyright wouldn't permit google to use it for free.

They asked the copyright owner for permission to use the flag, and the copyright owner said no. It isn't bad form at all. It would have been bad form if they'd used it without permission.
