Personally, I think trying to influence the major parties is a more effective form of activism, either as a lobbying group (http://www.wel.org.au/) or from within a party (http://www.emilyslist.org.au/). Realistically small parties have limited influence on the system, and no matter how good the cause building up a party to the size where it has national influence is hard - building organisations is a hard thing, political ones more so.
I'd be happy to talk to you about my experiences dealing with the political system if you are interested.
Yes, I would love to learn more. And yes, forming pressure groups rather than political parties makes more sense to me. However, I like to research lots of options, so I am curious about how the party structure is organized.

I certainly think its worth looking around at what is out there and finding the option that works best for you. I also think it is important to nap :-)
