Our lovely cake works out to be about $3.65. Cake mixes range from $0.89 through to $3.30. So it's *still* cheaper to buy the cake mixes.

Think of all those chemicals and E numbers you don't eat when you make it from scratch. Those cake mixes are spooky I reckon. Also, I thought from the picture that your cake was pretty big - I think it would take more than one box of cake mix to make one the same size.

Awwww don't feel sad. There are cake mixes available in my local stores for almost $5 these days. I'm going to be putting together a mix of gingernut biscuits and carrot cake mix I reckon soonish.

And yeah - your cake looks pretty big. I reckon it would be at least one and a half cake box mixes :)

Don't know how much it would cost to make a cake from my special cookbook but my cakes usually contain carob if I making one that I'm going to eat ,my choclate zucchini would be most probably less than 3.00 maybe and Ken usually looks out for specials at the cheescake shop but I don't know how much they are .

Also keep in mind that for most cake mixes you've gotta add the milk and eggs and oil/butter, and that will add to the cost of the box cake mix.

Factor that in, then compare costs once more.

Remember, the cheap 89c cakes don't taste as good as yours.

It's the equivalent to a 340 gram white wings packet of butter cake. Though the packet sizes are different these days.

I was using the recipe at the back of the women's weekly cookbooks for kids birthday cakes. They actually tell you it's the same ... and one of the books has a very handy chart detailing how long each pan type and number of batter mixes in it take to cook.

I went looking for my Mum's biscuit book before xmas, because I use it so much. They don't have it anymore. I was quite discouraged by the selection that I found at the newsagents now.
