My day stared early.
My day started early. Usually I am still gulping coffee and wishing it would never end before the day starts, but all too soon it did anyway. So, I thought that The Big V and I could make playdoh. I had found a recipe which uses 4 tablespoons of flour, so it doesn't make a huge batch and it looked fun and easy.
And it was so fun and easy that by the second colour, Vinnie did it all himself. He scooped in the flour and the salt. We counted it out into the sieve (we always sieve the flour, it's great for getting kids to "help" in the kitchen) and I gave him the dropper of oil and he squished it in, and I handed him the water with dye in it, and he poured it all in and stirred it up himself. When the dough got too hard I stirred it and kneaded it and etc, but he did all the hard work!!
I read somewhere about painting the salt dough which has been air dried so I am testing that tonight. Otherwise I have another recipe which suggests six hours at 100 degrees. That's a long time for a little kid and his mum.
I also have him a little dipping saucer with some silver cachous, some mini cake decorations like teddy bears, stars and dolphins and some cookie cutters to play with. Not only did this keep him busy and involved, but it kept him busy and involved for almost two hours!
Yay!
The Part Hell bit concerns another attempt at sewing. I took out my little mini sewing machine to try and make some drawstring bags. I failed. *sigh* I stopped trying when I was so frustrated and angry I wanted to cry. Then I dripped a bit while telling Babalon cos I was feeling sorry for myself. :-)
Another Part Hell is that I finally got them both down to sleep (V has been skipping naps, and Jack is either a 3 hour boy or a 40 minute boy) and was trying to catch up on yesterday's surprise bout of insomnia when Jack decided today was a 40 minute day. *sigh* So then I had a headache from being close to sleep and then awoken at a run. Ah well, a nice cup of tea helped, and Jack was happy enough once fed to lie there and tell the universe his life story. (Which apparently used to involve a lot of boobies, but now there are less boobies.)
Accomplishments!
I thought I had done no writing and then was surprised to discover that my trick of having the file open all day had worked and some mysterious stranger had written almost 500 words. Awesome, mysterious stranger! I shall put you in the next book! And I got carried away in the 500 challenge, and wrote even more! So I have a happy wordcount for today.
I'm really pleased with the curry I made for dinner. It's ended up more as a tomato casserole rather than curry, so next time I will add some garam marsala and start fiddling a bit. I used caramelized onions, which fixed previous issues I think it had (I'm a bit critical of my own cooking, have you noticed that?)
I can walk now with no discernable limp, but each step reminds me that I'm not out of the woods yet. But it's much much better. But of course I think I am relying on it a bit too much and so now it's pretty sore, and I just had it in ice water. But I can walk! Properly! I am going to try driving at some point in the future. The Volvo, I should point out, which has cruise control and should be gentler than the 121. I hope.
I have been listing things I can do with Vinnie:
- Make pompoms
- make pikelets
- glue his pictures into his book
- make a letter for aeryn
- make playdoh and play with it
- cook something
- paint a picture
- squirt paint at the castle
- decorate the castle
- paper mache some balloons
- paint the balloons when dry
- decorate the baloons when dry
- make papermache butterfly
- read books on things to do with kids.
- paper mache piggy banks
I need to plan for six per week. That's one activity in the morning and one activity after the nap on the three days there's just the three of us. Broken down like this and organized makes it seem much easier to deal with. From a distance that is!
