Reminds me of a story I heard about the children of Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Apparently when Michael Douglas tried to tell them that he made movies their reply was "Don't be silly Daddy, Mummy makes movies, you make pancakes"
Don't be too hard on the big V. He is just reflecting what he sees, which is Daddy going to work every day. He doesn't see your Mum heading off to work on a regular basis so it doesn't register that when she's not there she's doing something like going to work. He doesn't mean what you are reading into it, and he's too young to realise that what you do every day around the house is work. If he still says it when he is 8 then be concerned.
I quite expect Charlotte to take quite a while to realise that Mummy playing with the computer at Nanna's house all day is actually work!
Speaking seriously, it bothers me that so many women have just wound up doing two jobs instead of one. Some men are cool about helping around the house but a lot are not, and if you want your place to look clean and tidy you have option but to do it all yourself. And because women *can* earn their own livings a lot of men no longer feel responsible for the household and children - how many women do you know whose men have just walked out and never paid them a penny in maintenance? I've met quite a few:-(
However I have hope for the future. I think the increasing awareness of men as fathers, and the fact more men are putting more effort into being around when babies are born, and being good fathers, and critquing the idea of masculinity and manhood in the same ways we do femininity and womanhood is fantastic. It won't make a huge difference for us, but I am hoping it makes a huge difference for the future.
We're evolving. It's just taking a much longer time than we'd hoped.
Hopefully it was general perception of "people" and not by sex.
On the weekend I had about 4 "older generation" people in a row hear that M and I were married, then look at my name badge with my name, and say, But ...
M tried to say it was because I was published and all, but they still looked really puzzled!
My year 10s still can't get their head around the fact that one can be married AND not wear a wedding ring.
I feel like getting a poster printed up saying 'The only MISS Heald just turned one.' It can go with the 'READ THE FUCKING QUESTION' and 'Gay is NOT a synonym for shit' posters I want as well.
And on the flip side of the coin, Matt and I aren't legally married yet (unless the government has changed the law and made common law marriages legal of course), so we have different surnames, but we both wear our wedding rings already, refer to each other as husband and wife (as do our family and friends) and I've even had to put "married" as my status on my British passport application because there was no option for engaged or betrothed. And you know what... nobody has ever questioned it or asked for our marriage certificate. I don't think most people care.
