callistra: Fuschia from Sinfest crying her heart out next to Hell's flames (Angry AOL)
I am Callisto Shampoo.

I asked a friend once why he did not have any other nick, and he answered that he was the only person he knew with his name. I think this kind of bypassed what I was *really* asking.

What I think I may have been really asking was more along the lines of "How come you don't have any alter egos or other facets of your personality characterized by having a different name for them?" (Deep, huh>? Gotta love conversations with women. Most conversations with women seem simple...)

However, I never actually explained my question to him properly, so his answer has been lost in the universe of possibilities and perhaps if he reads this he might one day tell me "Calli, you think too hard, go and lie down the next time this happens." *grin*

I got Shampoo from uni. We had a large and varied (eclectic perhaps) group of friends held together by a common interest in a group called MARS, which is the Murdoch Alternative Reality Society. Being a young and innocent uni student, I managed to get suckered into this exported comic stuff called Manga and into the Ranma 1/2 universe. At one drunken party we were going through and labelling all our friends as various Ranma characters. I got Shampoo, at that point because I had dark royal blue hair, just like Shampoo does. Actually, it's usually a lighter blue than mine was, but hey, who's noticing?

Shampoo's story in a nutshell: Shampoo is an Amazon from China. She is beautiful, strong willed, and used to being the best of the best. At her village tournament, she was rather surprised when a red haired chinese girl defeated her in combat, and so she gave this upstart the kiss of death. What she does not know is that this red haired chinese girl, when dunked into warm water, is normally a rather handsome young japanese male a few years older than her called Ranma. When this black haired lad also manages to defeat her in battle, she must, by dictates of her village, marry the man who defeated her. She then chases him from country to country and causes troubles for Ranma's other fiancees and etc etc etc as only Rumiko Takahashi can write. However, when fighting with Ranma at Jusenkyo, she gets dunked into a pond which means cold water turns her into a cat, and warm water she goes back to her normal self.

Why did I keep Shampoo? Shampoo is strong willed, determined, resourceful, persistant, intelligent, and used to being the best of the best. Something in her just ... rang true. I could cross analyse this to death, but then I would have to re-read all the Ranma books, and I'll tell you now - THIS AINT HAPPENING! Not for a while at any rate! And the cat side of thing...I like cats. Cats are cool. :-)

Where did the Callisto come from? I admit it. *hangs head in shame* I am a huge Xena fan. I will, however, point out that I can't be too bad because I haven't seen the last seasons yet. Callisto is slim, beautiful, with blonde hair and brown eyes and fills her studded leather bikini top in a rather magnificent fashion. I was particularly attracted to her fighting style; Heidi Hudson Leick seems to have the sweetest little moves, like a snake, light on the foot and always attacking. I really liked her spin attack... but anyway. I loved Xena, it was fun, sexy, and smart. The actors and actresses really played the roles they were given, when Lucy played Callisto and Hudson played Xena, they had obviously studied each others mannerisms and did a fantastic body switch..sorry, distracted. Talking about distracted and *that* episode reminds me of Ares, Kevin Smith, who played the masculine war god to the hilt, and reminds me of every male shaped deity I have come across since. He was playful, masculine, sexy, annoying, and tempting...just like Pan.

Back to Callisto! Um...trying for a short explanation ... Callisto's parents were killed by Xena's army when she was evil, and Callisto swore to avenge them, ra ra ra, hot chick with nasty sword, ra ra ra, voyages of internal discovery for Xena and Callisto, ra ra ra, Callisto does not regret her bloody path until she is dead and has to face all the innocents she killed...ended up in Hell...Xena as an angel found her and gave up an eternity of Heaven to allow Callisto to reach Heaven, and Xena became a demon... Callisto's slate was washed clean and eventually became Xena's daughter.

That's nice I hear you say ... so why Callisto? Callisto is an unapologetic woman on mainstream TV. She burns with eternal anger, and is not afraid to let those around her know it. She burns with emotions and is only barely ever under control. She has seized destiny with both hands, and won't let go. She makes her own decisions, takes her own counsel, and leads others where they fear to tread. She is one of the few female characters I have seen on TV that was not apologetic about being angry. GODDAMNIT SHE HAD THE RIGHT TO BE ANGRY! Sure, her actions after that could have been re-thought, but that's a personal view, and we all make our own actions. But how often do we have things happen to us and we're told to "act like a grown up" whatever the hell that means. When we're hurt and pissed, we're doing our best to COVER IT UP. This can't be healthy; we are a chemical factory of sensations and reactions; and emotions are a flood of hormones into this factory for a reason. Instead of suppressing it, we should be tracing it back, trying to find out, why does this situation make us angry, and then learning from our anger. I've got a book called the Dance of Deception, which I really liked, but I think that perhaps it applies more to my mother's generation than me in particular, but I see the evidence of the problems of suppression enacted on TV every night, and it drives me batty! I hate TV, it's a constant re-enforcement of the norm, with the occasional horror element that has to keep getting more horrific and more horrific to try and keep that shock element ... and no one ever wonders if this is a good thing? The Dance of Deception takes an in depth look at the way women "pretend that every thing is OK" when inside they are a seething ball of emotion, and how this affects relationships, in particular to mother/daughter relationships.

By the way, if no one has noticed yet, I tend to rant, and I think I have a feminist streak a mile wide. *grin* I wonder what my friends will say about that?

You know what is nice about this live journal thing? No one can answer me back until AFTER I have posted it all! Bwahahahahahaha!

Anyway, so Callisto Shampoo comes from two very strong female characters which I hold in esteem. Probably not for the obvious reasons (burning entire villages is still kind of Naughty in my Book, Callisto!) but because women today STILL have so few choices in media forms to select from for female role models. I've had Callisto as a name for about 7 years, and Shampoo for about 10. Maybe I can blame them for what I have become today. Nah, I'll just blame the husband instead. *grin*. His ranty little blog is here: http://cheshirenoir.blogspot.com/

I think that's enough typing for my first two posts. I will try and find some cool pics on the net like every one else appears to have instead now!
